Man Arrested With Crates Full Of Puppies At San Diego-Mexico Border
LOS ANGELES (KCBS) -- A smuggling suspect was arrested after 23 dogs, including 20 puppies, packed in an SUV were seized at the U.S.-Mexico border., authorities said.
The San Diego Union-Tribune reported the driver told officials at the San Ysidro border crossing on Saturday that he had picked up the dogs in Tijuana and was bringing them to the Los Angeles area.
Animal control officers said it was very hot and humid inside the vehicle, according to the San Diego County News Center. The suspect, identified as Daniel Canedo, told authorities that he had not given the dogs water for more than five hours.
U.S. Customs and Border Protection feared the dogs were dead because they weren't moving, the County News Center reported, but once their crates were moved into the fresh air, the dogs revived except for two which were taken to an emergency veterinary clinic.
All the dogs, including labradors, shepherds, hounds, terriers and chihuahuas were are expected to make a full recovery and will be offered for adoption.
Canedo was charged with 23 misdemeanor counts of animal cruelty, and if guilty faces up to six months jail and $1,000 fine for each count, County News Center reported.
