Suspect Who Led Police On Treasure Island, Bay Bridge Chase In Stolen Cop Car Identified
SAN FRANCISCO (CBS SF) -- A man who allegedly led stole a police vehicle and led officers on a wild chase to Treasure Island and the Bay Bridge over the weekend has been identified.
Randal Lee Maykopet, 26, was booked into San Francisco County Jail on a litany of charges, including carjacking, assault with a deadly weapon, hit & run, and driving under the influence.
Officers who responded Saturday morning to reports of a man with a knife in the Cow Hollow neighborhood tried to detain Maykopet but he ran away and drove off in a police SUV, police said.
Maykopet allegedly led officers on a chase on city streets - hitting several vehicles along the way - before making his way to Treasure Island.
Once there, police said Maykopet drove onto a sidewalk to avoid blocked path and officers opened fire on him to protect the safety of pedestrians and officers.
Maykopet, who was not hit, then collided with another vehicle as he drove onto the westbound Bay Bridge ramp from Treasure Island, police said.
He then allegedly got out of the SUV and jumped 30 to 40 feet from the upper deck to the lower deck of the Bay Bridge, according to police, and then allegedly tried to carjack a vehicle until an officer made the same jump and arrested him.
Maykopet, two officers, and one motorist went to a hospital for treatment of injuries not considered life-threatening, according to police.
Police spokesman Officer Albie Esparza said in a statement that Maykopet faces charges of carjacking, attempted carjacking, felony evasion, vandalism, resisting arrest, assault with a deadly weapon, hit & run, driving under the influence causing injury, felony hit & run, unlicensed driver, and felony hit & run reckless causing injury.
The police department's homicide and internal affairs divisions, the district attorney's office and the San Francisco's Office of Citizen Complaints were investigating the incident.
