Suspect In Wrong-Way Chase Through East Bay Calls 911 To Complain About Chase
CONCORD (CBS SF) -- A man leading police on a chase while driving the wrong way on Highway 4 through the East Bay called 911 operators to complain about being chased.
The incident began around 11:30 p.m. in Concord. CHP received the call about a suspect in a stolen Honda Accord driving the wrong way on the freeway.
During the chase, the suspect called 911, and told the operator to have police stop chasing him.
"I'm on speakerphone right now! Stop chasing me! I am going to crash!" the suspect told 911.
The dispatcher asked the man if he was the person driving in the wrong direction, which he responded "Yes, I am, yeah, stop chasing me! Tell the helicopter to get away from me."
Despite the suspect's request, police continued to follow him.
"He relayed that he knew the police were following him, and the helicopter was above, and if the helicopter were to stop following, he would then stop his car," said CHP Sgt. John Koven.
The suspect made an ominous threat to the dispatcher at the end of the call.
"Somebody is going to die!" he said.
Drivers on Highway 4 were shocked to see the driver going the wrong way.
"I almost got hit head on by some maniac trying to drive in the slow lane, going the wrong way on highway 4," one driver said.
The chase ended with a crash in Berkeley where another driver was injured, and sent to the hospital.
The suspect was still at large.
