Suspect Escapes After Exchanging Gunfire With Oakland Police
OAKLAND (CBS SF) - A suspect who ran from police after a traffic stop and was involved in an officer-involved shooting Wednesday remains at large, Oakland police said Thursday.
Sgt. Chris Bolton said the incident began around 7:30 p.m. on Wednesday when officers conducted a vehicle traffic stop in the area of Ney Avenue near Ritchie Street.
He said as officers prepared to conduct a felony probation search on the vehicle's front passenger, the rear passenger of the vehicle ran from the car and officers pursued him into the 7900 block of MacArthur Boulevard.
The pursuing officers saw the suspect produce and brandish a firearm so an officer sought cover and fired his service pistol at the suspect because he believed the suspect posed an immediate threat, Bolton said.
The suspect initially fell to the ground but then was able to continue running and went into the backyards of nearby homes, according to Bolton. The suspect's firearm was recovered from the scene, he said.
Officers set up a perimeter in the area and were joined by a SWAT team that helped them look for the suspect but the suspect was able to escape and is still at large, Bolton said.
No officers were injured during the incident and it is unknown if the suspect sustained any injuries, he said.
Police didn't provide a description of the suspect or the vehicle.
