Suspect Dead Following North Berkeley SWAT Standoff
BERKELEY (CBS 5) - An armed standoff lasting more than nine hours ended Tuesday morning when officers entered a home in North Berkeley to find the suspect shot dead.
Officers were called to the 1800 block of Marin Avenue at about 7:35 p.m.
The first officer to arrive heard two shots fired nearby, and soon after, a resident on the block reported a home being hit by gunfire.
Responding officers determined that someone inside a home had fired the shots, police said. Officers surrounded that home, and nearby residents were evacuated for their safety.
The Police Department's barricaded suspect/hostage negotiation team responded to the scene and tried for several hours to negotiate with the man in the home.
S.W.A.T. officers were able to communicate with the suspect from a distance during the standoff, but eventually heard a single gunshot inside.
When they entered the home, they found the man dead from an apparent self-inflected gunshot wound.
No other injuries were reported as a result of the incident.
