Suspect Arrested In Seaside Child Kidnapping Attempt
SEASIDE (CBS SF) -- A 35-year-old man was arrested for his alleged attempt at taking one of two children he approached at a fast food restaurant Friday afternoon in Seaside, police said.
Salvador Perez was arrested on suspicion of felony attempted kidnapping and was booked into Monterey County Jail, police said.
Around 1:45 p.m. Friday, officers responded to a report of a man who tried to abduct a child from Church's Chicken restaurant at 1390 Fremont Blvd., police said.
The suspect, later identified as Perez, had loitered inside the restaurant and approached a family who was having lunch, police said.
He stood over a 3-year-old girl "in an aggressive manner" but was interrupted by a parent who took hold of her, according to police.
Perez then allegedly grasped a 10-year-old boy ordering food with his aunt at the register and attempted to drag him out of the store, police said.
A good Samaritan tackled Perez and a struggle ensued, but the suspect was able to flee, according to police.
Witnesses gave officers a detailed description of the suspect, who was found about six blocks away in the 400 block of Elm Avenue, according to police.
There appears to be no relationship between Perez and the two children and neither family knew who Perez was, police said.
