Suspect Arrested After Crashing Into San Jose Fire Engine

SAN JOSE (KCBS) – San Jose police arrested a man on suspicion of driving under the influence early Sunday morning after he drove his car into a fire truck.

Two firefighters were on the engine, which was just leaving the scene of a one-alarm fire. San Jose Fire Captain Rob Brown said the accident occurred as the engine was stopped on Marbury Road at High Glen Drive.

"The fire had taken place and they were parked with their emergency lights on in the middle of the street," said Brown. "A car came around the stopped traffic at a high rate of speed and rear-ended their vehicle."

Brown said the impact of the collision launched the sports coupe 15 to 20 feet in the air. Despite that, neither the driver of the vehicle or the firefighters on the engine were injured.

"It's a good reminder that a lot of times, the danger that we face is not only on the scene, but it can be going to or coming from the scene," Brown said.

The driver of the sports coupe is a man in his early 20s and Brown said he appeared to be intoxicated.

There were 23 firefighters and two battalion chiefs on scene fighting the blaze, which caused an estimated $5,000-10,000 in damage to the house.
