Monterey Bay Shark Attack Leaves Surfer Hospitalized
MONTEREY (CBS SF) -- A surfer was hospitalized after being attacked by a shark off a Monterey beach.
27-year-old Eric Tarantino was attacked Saturday morning while surfing with a friend at Marina State Beach in Monterey County.
The shark bit Tarantino on the neck and forearm shortly after the two men entered the water.
Tarantino's friend helped him out of the water, and other surfers used beach towels to try to stop his bleeding.
Authorities said the Monterey man was taken to a local airport by paramedics and flown to a San Jose hospital.
His condition wasn't known, but a state parks official said Tarantino's injuries didn't appear to be life-threatening.
The shark left a large gash in Tarantino's red surfboard.
