Superstitious Giants Fans Consider West Side Story Connection
SAN FRANCISCO (KCBS) - The San Francisco Giants grabbed a commanding three-games-to-one lead over the Rangers with Sunday night's 4-0 victory in the Lone Star State. That had San Francisco one win away from its first championship in 56 years, and its first since moving West from New York in 1958.
The team left New York the same year West Side Story opened on Broadway. Was it sheer coincidence that an award-winning revival of that show opened in San Francisco last week, the same night the World Series began?
West Side Story's famous gang - the Jets - wore orange, much like Giants players and fans.
KCBS reporter Doug Sovern deemed those coincidences eerie enough to inspire him to break out in song - not by accident, to the tune of one of the musical's biggest numbers.
KCBS' Doug Sovern Reports:
Texas, by the way, planned to send Cliff Lee to the mound Monday night in hopes of extending its playoff run. He would be going up against two-time Cy Young Award winner Tim Lincecum. Lee was 7-0 in postseason play before the Giants beat him in Game 1 of the Fall Classic.
