Will Tonight's Sunset Be As Spectacular As Wednesday's?

Q: Hi Roberta! Why was last night's sunset so red? Thank you! - Patricia Davis, Concord
A: You saw it too? Wasn't it amazing? In fact, I snapped the picture above!
Sunlight is made up of all kinds of different colors of light! Keep in mind, each color of light has a wavelength. At sunset, we see more red light because it is being scattered through tiny particles in the lower atmosphere. These particles are referred to as aerosols. These aerosols or tiny particles are from burning fossil fuels or naturally from soil or dust, perhaps even salt from the ocean.
Last night, the sky was even more dramatic as the red sunlight reflected off the ribbon of clouds. This evening's sunset will be spectacular too, if the forecasted nighttime cloudy skies do not move in too early!
