SWAT Team Kills Sunnyvale Man After Standoff; Woman Found Dead
SUNNYVALE (CBS SF) -Police shot and killed a man who claimed to have murdered someone inside a Sunnyvale home early this morning, and officers have found a woman's body inside the residence, a police spokesman said.
What sounded like gunfire had been heard earlier at the home, and a person called police around 8 a.m. and said he had killed someone inside his home in the 600 block of San Pedro Ave., Capt. Dave Pitts said.
At 8:53 a.m., a SWAT vehicle was driven onto the front yard of the home. Roughly 10 SWAT officers wearing bulletproof vests then approached the front of the home.
A few moments later, a voice could be heard on a loudspeaker saying "Come out with your hands up."
A team of about six SWAT officers entered the home about 10 a.m. and within seconds, several loud gunshots were heard.
"The SWAT team approached the residence and made contact with the individual inside the residence," Pitts said. "At that point, the individual charged the officers with a weapon. The officers were forced to open fire and shoot the individual."
He was pronounced dead at the scene. During a sweep of the residence, officers confirmed an adult female was also dead in the residence.
Authorities would not confirm the relationship between the man and the woman but neighbors said there was a conflict between a husband and wife at the home.
Neighbor Tom Cottam, 62, who has lived down the street on Coachella Avenue since 1958, said he believes the people who lived at the home where the standoff occurred were husband and wife.
"We've never had anything like this happen in this neighborhood," he said.
After hearing that police said the suspect was armed, Cottam said, "It's unfortunate that the guy had a weapon and that those officers had no choice but to kill him."

Authorities evacuated some nearby homes during the standoff and advised other residents to shelter in place, Pitts said.
The area was shut down to motorists and pedestrians.
