Sunnyvale Scores Big On International Business Ranking

SUNNYVALE (KCBS) - Looking for a small city with big financial potential? Look no further than Sunnyvale, the Bay Area town that snagged some impressive accolades in a new survey by the Financial Times of London.

KCBS' Mike Colgan Reports:

"Of all the cities that they've surveyed, they named within our population classes of small cities Sunnyvale as having the best economic potential of all the cities," declared Sunnyvale spokesperson John Pilger. "Some of the criteria that the judges looked at included such things as population, number of patents, growth in number of patents and Sunnyvale was noted just in a matter of a couple of years ago as being second in the country in number of patents that we have."

Sunnyvale also took the number two spot in the publication's "human resources" ranking for small cities.

"That looked at such things as unemployment rate, number of colleges and universities and brain drain," said Pilger. "So having the kind of population that we have here, the kind of high skill technical workers that we have obviously contributed greatly."

Another honor for Sunnyvale: the city ranked fifth in the "quality of life" category - again, for small cities.

"This covered a number of things from crime rate to Internet speeds in the area, Internet download speeds, SAT scores, life expectancy," Pilger outlined. "Quality of life has been something we always take very seriously and something that we're very proud of in Sunnyvale."

Two Bay Area cities classified as "major cities" also fared well in the publication's ranking - San Jose ranked fourth in the "economic potential" category, with San Francisco following in the number ten spot. San Francisco also ranked second in terms of "quality of life" in major cities, with San Jose tenth in that category.
