Sunnyvale Police Standoff With Armed Man Ends Peacefully
SUNNYVALE (BCN) -- A police standoff at a Sunnyvale home with a man who stabbed himself as well as a family member during a dispute early Monday morning has ended, a Department of Public Safety spokesman said.
The standoff began shortly after 10 a.m. at a single-story home in the 200 block of Velvetlake Drive, spokesman John Pilger said.
It ended around 4 p.m. after officers used a robot to determine the suspect's location and then deployed gas to enter the house, Pilger said.
The suspect was transported to a hospital with self-inflicted stab wounds, Pilger said.
During the six-hour standoff, the man told officers that he had a gun, but as of 4:45 p.m., officers were processing the scene and had not recovered one.
Police believe the man stabbed a family member around 5 a.m.
Officers arrived and helped transport the victim to a hospital after a relative driving on Lawrence Expressway called police to report that a person had been stabbed and needed medical assistance.
The victim's injuries are not considered life threatening, Pilger said.
Around 10 a.m., a resident of Velvetlake Drive called police to say a man was sneaking into the backyard of a home.
Officers arrived and went to the backyard, where they heard a man calling out, "Get out of here. I've got a gun," Pilger said.
Officers closed Velvetlake Drive and the two right lanes of Lawrence Expressway to secure the area. A SWAT team was called for assistance.
Negotiators had on-and-off contact with the man, Pilger said. He said there were extensive periods of time when the man made no sounds or movement.
He will be booked into jail after he is released from the hospital, Pilger said.
