Students Should Never Give Up On Their Dreams, Says San Francisco Nurse
At an early age, Susan Tanner seemed destined to have a career in health care. Growing up with seven siblings, she was often called on to tend for them whenever one or more were injured or ill. Now years later, Tanner has reached her career and educational goals, working as a family nurse practitioner (FPN) for CareMore, whose Medicare plan is among the best in California. Her strength, passion, perseverance and sacrifices qualifies her as a perfect role model for current and future nursing students.
What is your background and education?
"My passion to care for others began in my hometown, Atlanta, Georgia. As one of eight, I was always called upon to care for my siblings whenever injury or illness fell upon them; this is what sparked my interest in health care."
"My education began when I attended technical school and became certified in phlebotomy. After working as a phlebotomist for two years, I transitioned into the nursing program and became a Licensed Practical Nurse where I served within the medical surgical unit for 10 years. With every passing day, I knew nursing was my divine career path, so I continued my education at Delaware State University where I obtained my B.S. in Nursing. I continued my career as an RN for two years. Being the ambitious woman that I am, I wanted to give back even more and returned to school and attended Wilmington University to become a family nurse practitioner. I now reside in the Bay Area and enjoy working at CareMore."
How has your education helped you in your current position?
"The path I chose was not one of a typical college student, yet one of a determined student. Every course taken was an intricate component to my nursing preparation. My graduate degree provided me with advanced training to be an autonomous clinical primary care provider to offer my patients positive outcomes and excellent service."
What career advice would you like to share with other students?
"Although I've reached my career and educational goals, my journey was not an easy one. My path was a bumpy road, yet I persevered and sacrificed. Thus, my advice to nursing students would be to never give up on their dreams and goals – no matter how tough the endurance becomes."
