Stretch Of BART Tracks Shut Down For Worker Death Investigation
WALNUT CREEK (CBS SF) -- A stretch of Bay Area Rapid Transit tracks in Contra Costa County was closed from noon to about 3:30 p.m. Wednesday as the National Transportation Safety Board investigated the BART accident that killed two workers over the weekend.
The tracks were closed between the Lafayette and Pleasant Hill stations to allow NTSB investigators to conduct a re-enactment of the accident, which occurred at about 2 p.m. Saturday about a mile north of the Walnut Creek station.
BART officials had set up a bus bridge that would take riders between the Lafayette, Pleasant Hill and Walnut Creek stations during the closure.
The re-enactment will help the NTSB learn more about why engineers Laurence Daniels, 66, and Christopher Sheppard, 58, were struck by a train while investigating a report of a dip in the trackway.
The train that hit the pair had no passengers on board and the person at the controls was an operator in training, according to the NTSB.
The accident occurred during the BART strike, which began Friday and ended Monday night.
