Store Owner Uses Kaepernick Jersey As Doormat
CRESTWOOD, Ill. (CBS) – A Chicago-area store owner is using a replica of Colin Kaepernick's jersey as a doormat to protest the San Francisco 49ers quarterback's decision not to stand during the national anthem.
Dave Gerwing, who owns a mattress store in the suburb of Crestwood, placed the replica in front of his business and with a sign inviting customers to wipe their feet, CBS Chicago reported.
"Sitting down on your butt is nothing more than a disservice and disrespect to the people fighting for our rights," Gerwing said.
"Does he have the right to protest? Absolutely," the store owner went to say. "The same way I have the right to put his jersey on the floor."
Kaepernick has taken a knee during the Star Spangled Banner since the preseason to protest racial injustice and recent police killings. While the quarterback has been criticized, athletes have also come to his defense, and in some cases, joined his protest.
