State Senator Calls For Greater Oversight Of Cow Palace
DALY CITY (CBS) -- The Cow Palace has again come under fire following a music event held there, during which several attendees were hospitalized for suspected drug overdoses.
Sixteen people were sent to the hospital Friday night and two remained in critical condition on Sunday due to suspected overdoses at the Daly City venue during an electronic music and dance festival.
Just five months ago, nine people were hospitalized and two died after a rave at the Cow Palace.
KCBS' Margie Shafer Reports:
"You know there's going to be drug dealing, you know that people are going to be overdosed because of past history," said state Senator Leland Yee.
"The way to prevent that from happening is to make sure that the appropriate medical and law enforcement attention is available. That should have taken care of the problem."
Yee said the Cow Palace is more concerned with the bottom line than with safety.
"Cow Palace management and their board are derelict in their responsibility," he said.
Senator Yee had introduced a bill to let Daly City purchase the Cow Palace for redevelopment but it didn't have the support of the governor.
Now Yee wants use of the site to be redefined and for lawmakers to have greater oversight when the legislature reconvenes in Sacramento.
