(CBS NEWS) - Word traveled quickly from Washington to Hollywood and via through Twitter when the Supreme Court struck down a key part of the Defense of Marriage Act on Wednesday morning, with stars like Leonardo DiCaprio and Neil Patrick Harris celebrating the victory for gay rights.
The Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA) was first enacted in 1996 and denied federal benefits to same-sex couples. The Supreme Court ruled that the act was unconstitutional.
In a separate ruling, the court also effectively permitted same-sex marriages to resume in the state of California.
