Stanford Men Fall To No. 1 Virginia In NCAA tennis
SATNFORD (CBS / AP) -- The No. 8-seeded Stanford men's tennis team fell Saturday night to top-ranked, 33-0 Virginia 4-3 in the quarterfinals of the NCAA championships.
In beating the Cardinal (21-5) the Cavaliers advance to Monday's semifinals at Stanford vs. Ohio State. No. 2 USC and No. 6 Georgia will meet in the other semi.
UVA'S Sanam Singh defeated Stanford's Alex Clayton in No. 3 singles 3-6, 6-4, 6-3 to decide the match. Earlier Bradley Klahn, Ryan Thacher and Matt Kandath won in singles for Stanford.
On the women's side, Carolyn McVeigh outlasted Stacey Lee 7-5, 3-6, 6-1 to clinch the host No. 1 Stanford women's 4-2 victory over Northwestern after more than five hours early Saturday morning at Stanford.
The Cardinal (26-0) advanced to Sunday's quarterfinals where it will face No. 8-seeded Georgia, a 4-3 winner over No. 9 Cal.
The Stanford women extended their NCAA-record home winning streak to 182.
