Magnitude 7.0 Earthquake Strikes Southern Japan, Day After 6.5 Quake
(CBS SF) – A magnitude 7.0 earthquake struck an island in southern Japan on Friday, one day after a magnitude 6.5 earthquake caused significant damage in the region.
According to the U.S. Geological Survey, the earthquake struck near the city of Kumamoto on the island of Kyushu around 9:25 a.m. Pacific Time. Kumamoto is more than 700 miles southwest of Tokyo.
The Japanese Government issued a tsunami advisory in the Ariake Sea and Yatsushiro Sea near the earthquake epicenter. There are NO tsunami advisories or warnings for the U.S. mainland or Hawaii.
Nine people were killed and at 800 people were injured from Thursday's earthquake.
