South San Francisco Water Main Break Causes Damage, Evacuations
SOUTH SAN FRANCISCO (CBS SF) -- South San Francisco residents who were evacuated due to a water main break Friday morning have been allowed to return to their homes, officials said.
The water main, a 12-inch line connected to a larger 60-inch line, broke on Elm Street between Park Way and Tamarack Way around 9:45 a.m., according to Charles Sheehan, a spokesman for the San Francisco Public Utilities Commission.
The water flooded several cars and forced the evacuation of six
homes. Repair crews and investigators were on scene around 10:30 a.m. and water flow was shut off shortly before 1 p.m.
Repairs are underway and the pipeline is back in service. The
cause of the break remains under investigation, but Sheehan noted that both the 12-inch and 60-inch line were recently upgraded.
The pipeline is one of several that deliver drinking water to northern San Mateo County and San Francisco, Sheehan said. Water service was not interrupted by the break.
