Sonoma County Brush Fire Contained After Destroying 6 Structures, Shutting Power
SONOMA (KCBS) — A 40-acre brush fire that destroyed six structures in an area south of Sonoma was extinguished early Monday morning but a power line was destroyed and many residents remain without power as PG&E crews work to restore it, fire officials said.
The fire, first reported on the right-hand shoulder of state Highway 121 in the Schellville area around 1:30 p.m,, broke out at a storage yard for a company that makes wood pallets and may have been caused by a spark from a tow truck.
"Once it got into the pallets, it was an intense fire fight that was quite difficult. We had over 30 commercial trailers involved," Sonoma County Fire Department Battalion Chief Ray Mulas said.
The fire damaged around 40 acres, 10 recreational vehicles and factory equipment, as well as six buildings, Paulson said.
One home close to Highway 121 at Fremont Road was evacuated but there were no injuries reported.
At one point during the fire, a propane tank exploded knocking out power on 220,000-volt power line. PG&E crews were on scene working to restore power.
