Sonoma Budget Woes Could Mean Hundreds Of Layoffs
SONOMA (AP) -- Sonoma County officials say increasing retirement benefits and other costs are causing the budget deficit to grow beyond predictions, requiring a second round of layoffs.
County Administrator Veronica Ferguson told the board of supervisors on Tuesday that the general fund deficit projected to be around $17 million is expected to climb to $27 million by next June.
This would mean another round of layoffs and program cuts. As many as 300 jobs could be axed in the next fiscal year.
The county cut about 230 filled and unfilled positions this year, laying off 61 workers.
