Some San Jose Bars, Restaurants On Thin Ice Over NHL Lockout
SAN JOSE (KCBS) — The ongoing lockout between the National Hockey League and its players has put the freeze on bars and restaurants near the HP Pavilion in San Jose, where the Sharks play.
With more than a quarter of the season already wiped out, the absence of teal is putting many Downtown San Jose businesses in the red, so to speak. Local business owners told KCBS they are hoping that a settlement is reached soon.
The NHL has already cancelled games through the end of November, as both sides remain far apart at the bargaining table. But Scott Knies of the San Jose Downtown Association was optimistic about both sides resolving their differences.
KCBS' Mike Colgan Reports:
"We're hopeful that we can play games by Christmas. Last year, the NBA was on strike and was on lockout. They started playing games on Christmas, had enough of a season that everyone thought it was fine," Knies said. "Same thing with the NHL: you need about 60 games to have a legitimate season. So we're kind of getting down to the deadline now."
Knies added that a lot of Sharks season ticket holders are affected since they have routines.
"They have a lot of favorite places they like to park, eat, and drink and they do it game after game," Knies said.
As of Monday, 11 of the 41 Sharks home games have been canceled because of the lockout, with little progress being reported at the bargaining table.
