Soberanes Wildfire Near Big Sur Is 50 Percent Contained

MONTEREY COUNTY (CBS SF) -- More than two weeks since the Soberanes wildfire began with an illegal campfire near Big Sur, the blaze is 50 percent contained, CalFire officials said Monday night.

The blaze, which began on July 22nd at Garrapata State Park, has burned 60,900 acres so far, according to the Soberanes wildfire incident report, released Monday evening.

Around 5,000 people are still actively fighting the wildfire, with CalFire and the U.S. Forest Service working together.

The fire has claimed one life and injured three. Fifty-seven homes and 11 outbuildings have been destroyed, with 410 structures still threatened, according to fire officials.

U.S. Highway 1 closes Monday night starting at 10 p.m. and is expected to reopen at 6 a.m. on Tuesday.

The expected containment date of the Soberanes fire is August 31, 2016, according to CalFire.
