Six East Bay Cities Vie For 2nd Lawrence Berkeley National Lab Campus
ALAMEDA (KCBS) - Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory has whittled its list of potential locations for a second campus down to six East Bay cities.
Alameda, Albany, Berkeley, Emeryville, Oakland and Richmond all managed to stay in the running for a development that would host 800 workers by consolidating several facilities and offices not on the UC Berkeley campus.
Lawn signs and banners have gone up in Alameda to generate public support for a project Alameda City Manager John Russo sees as a chance to spur development around the former Naval Air Station.
"Alameda has really missed having an engine of economic activity out on the western part of the city," he said.

Richmond City Manager Bill Lindsay said a digital billboard along Interstate 80 and buttons reading "I love LBNL" have been donated for their campaign.
"It's to show the lab that we really want to work with them and we would be a welcoming community," he said.
Laboratory officials have rejected 15 other cities as unsuitable for the new campus slated to open in 2016. A final decision on the new location is expected in November.
