Silicon Valley's Tech Community Lends A Hand To Second Harvest Food Bank
SAN JOSE (KCBS) — Second Harvest Food Bank of Santa Clara and San Mateo counties has kicked off its holiday food drive. This year, Silicon Valley's tech community is playing a role in helping feed the hungry.
Food is distributed at Second Harvest as well as 770 other locations. While the economy improves, food for the needy is still important.
"One in 10 people go hungry and don't have food to eat. They often go unnoticed because there's a large land mass here. They're spread out, but it's our neighbors. It's people you may not know that live right in your neighborhood everyday that have this problem," said BJ Jenkins, CEO of Barracuda Networks. He is also the co-chair of the Holiday Food and Fun Drive.
Second Harvest CEO Kathy Jackson said rising rents are taking a bigger bite out of people's paychecks.
"Today's Second Harvest is launching what is actually the largest food and fund drive in the nation. With audacious goals, I might say terrifying goals, to raise $13.2 million and two million pounds of food," Jackson said.
Members of the tech community are helping out by raising funds and in distributing food.
