Silicon Valley Leaders Fight For Future Of Moffett Field's Hangar One
MOUNTAIN VIEW (KCBS) – Leaders in Silicon Valley are renewing their efforts to save the historic Hangar One structure at Moffett Field in Mountain View.
Members of the Silicon Valley Leadership Group, Joint Venture Silicon Valley and the Bay Area Council have co-signed a letter to the Obama Administration. They have said that the debate over Hangar One puts the vitality and future of the NASA Ames Research Center at risk.
KCBS' Chris Filippi Reports:
"It's a key part of our disaster preparedness plan," said Silicon Valley Leadership Group President Carl Guardino. "There is just too much at stake to risk Hangar One and we wanted to make that clear to the President."
That message was emphasized by Peninsula Congresswoman Anna Eshoo, who spoke with President Obama when he got off Air Force One at Moffett Field last week.
"A prized relic of World War II. It's something that is historic and it's valued by the people in these communities," said Eshoo.
Three Google executives have offered to pay for the restoration of Hangar One if they can use some of the space to house their private planes, but NASA has yet to respond to that proposal.
In a letter to Eshoo, NASA administrator Charles Bolden said Hangar One and the runways at Moffett Field are an "excess to the agency" and should undergo a review by the General Services Administration.
