Sidewalk Shutdown Could Create Problems On Golden Gate Bridge
SAUSALITO (KCBS) - It was about to get very crowded for cyclists and pedestrians on the iconic Golden Gate Bridge. The west sidewalk was scheduled for a four-month closure starting after the Memorial holiday weekend.
The shutdown is part of the bridge's overall seismic retrofit program.
KCBS' Chris Filippi Reports:
"So for the four-month period, bicyclists and pedestrians will be sharing the east sidewalk," warned Golden Gate Bridge District spokeswoman, Mary Currie.
"We don't know if there will be a speed limit, education, or sidewalk striping," Currie said of the possible efforts that would be put into place to ease confusion and congestion. "Or a combination of all of the above."
Ahead of the closure, there appeared to be mixed reaction from the people who would potentially be impacted. Some cyclists worried that it would slow their more strenuous rides or two-wheeled commutes, while some pedestrians pointed out that they were already having to dodge bicyclists and worried the closure would only increase that danger.
One tourist perhaps summed it up best - as long as there were no accidents, everything would be alright.
