Shoes Left At Burglarized Sonoma County Home Lead To Arrest
SAN FRANCISCO (CBS SF) - DNA taken from a pair of shoes left at a burglarized home in Sebastopol in June led to the arrest of a San Francisco man on Tuesday, a Sonoma County sheriff's sergeant said.
A female resident who lives in the area of McGregor Lane and Thorn Road said she woke up around 1:40 a.m. on June 12 when a light came on near her kitchen, Sgt. Mike Raasch said.
When the woman realized it was an intruder and not her husband, she screamed and the suspect fled with $13 but left his shoes behind, Raasch said.
The sheriff's office sent the shoes to a crime lab in July. In September, DNA evidence linked the shoes to 31-year-old Jair Soares Hoover, a former Sebastopol resident. Hoover was arrested by San Francisco police at his apartment on Market Street in San Francisco on Tuesday, Raasch said.
Hoover's parents live near the Sebastopol home that was burglarized, and Hoover also is suspected of burglarizing the same home in May, Raasch said.
During an interview with a sheriff's detective at the San Francisco jail on Tuesday, Hoover admitted to stealing money from the Sebastopol house on two occasions, Raasch said.
He was booked into Sonoma County Jail on Wednesday on two counts of residential burglary and a violation of probation he received for another theft case, Raasch said.
Raasch said this was the second residential burglary case the sheriff's office has solved with DNA evidence.
The other incident was in Windsor earlier this year, he said. Two men suspected in several home burglaries in the county are awaiting trial in that case, Raasch said.
