Sheriff's Deputy Shot While Volunteering At Union City High School Event
UNION CITY (CBS SF) -- An Alameda County sheriff's deputy was shot Saturday night while volunteering at an event at Union City's James Logan High School by one of three men he was escorting off campus, according to police.
The deputy, a parent at the school, was helping with the California Color Guard Circuit Evaluation at about 8:15 p.m. when he noticed three men in their late teens or early 20s in a locked area of the school, Union City police said.
He approached them, showed them his badge and asked them to leave, police said. But while he was escorting them off campus, one of the men turned around and told him to stop following them, pulling out a gun.
The deputy turned and started walking away, but the suspect opened fire, hitting the deputy in his leg. The deputy was armed but did not draw his gun, police said.
The deputy was taken to a hospital to be treated for the gunshot wound. The school and color guard event were briefly locked down after the shooting.
The three suspects remain at large. Police described them all as Hispanic men wearing dark clothing.
The first was described as 19 or 20 years old, standing 5 feet 5 inches tall with a small build and a dark complexion.
The second was described as between 19 and 23 years old, 5 feet 11 inches tall with a thin build and a dark complexion.
The third was described as between 18 and 20 years old, standing 5 feet 7 inches or 5 feet 8 inches tall with a thin build.
Police released a sketch of one of the suspects, though not the man who shot the deputy.
