Shark Bites Livermore Teenager On Hawaii Vacation
LAHAINA, Hawaii (CBS/AP) -- Maui County officials said it appears a shark bit a 16-year-old girl visiting from the Bay Area.
A possible shark attack was reported to the fire department Tuesday morning. Fire crews arrived to the beach in front of the Hololani Resort in Lahaina and found the girl with what appeared to be a 3- to 5-inch bite on her left calf from a small reef shark.
The family, visiting from Livermore, opted to transport the girl on their own to get medical treatment.
The girl told state officials she was bit while sitting in water about 2- to 3-feet deep but didn't see anything.
Treating the incident as a shark attack, officials are closing the beach until at least 6:45 p.m. Tuesday. No sharks have been spotted in the area.
