SFPD Fine-Tunes Celebration Response Tactics Using World Series Lessons
SAN FRANCISCO (KCBS) - The reminders continue: it will be all hands on deck and zero tolerance for violence in San Francisco during and after the 49ers' appearance in the Super Bowl.
Expect a finely tuned presence from SFPD, considering it was just several months ago, Oct. 28, 2012, when the San Francisco Giants capped off a World Series sweep of the Tigers, and plenty of people took to the streets to celebrate, and many took their celebrations a little too far.
"One of the things that happened that nobody had seen before was the amount of bonfires," recalled Greg Suhr, Chief of Police.
Fine Tuning Continues for SFPD Ahead of Super Bowl
The World Series ended on garbage night for many neighborhoods; the same holds true for the 2013 Super Bowl.
"We'll make sure we pick up the garbage early," Suhr revealed part of the strategy.
Authorities are also committed to keeping public transit safe on game day, especially because so many Muni buses run on overhead wires.
"MTA makes some diesels, so that if we get some big crowds, they can just go around," he explained.
There will be no public venue to watch the game, so it's expected that fans will be packing bars in the city's hot spots.
"King St., by the ballpark, Union St., Chestnut St., Geary St.," said Suhr.
