Irene Upends SFO International Travel Plans
MILLBRAE (KCBS)— Dozens of flight cancellations at San Francisco International Airport stemming from Hurricane Irene are causing headaches, not only for travelers headed towards New York, but for those headed overseas this weekend, as well.
SFO spokesman Mike McCarron said you can expect even more cancellations and warned it will take a couple of days for airline schedules to get back to normal.
KCBS' Anna Duckworth Reports:
"We advise people not to even come to the airport unless they know exactly when their flight is taking off," he said as a matter of fact.
Among the impacted was a man whose flight to Paris was canceled because of a stop at Washington Dulles International Airport.
Anna Bernardo, whose Saturday morning flight home to Portugal on United Airlines, was scrapped because it had a stop in Boston.
She said she's supposed to be back to work on Tuesday, but couldn't get re-booked until Friday.
"I have four days. I don't know what I'm going to say to my boss," said Bernardo, a teacher.
Kate Oldenberg's flight to LAX took off after a family visit in San Francisco, but she said her brother-in-law's red eye flight to Boston was a no go and that he can't get re-booked until September 4.
"His wife is seven months pregnant and they're worried about their house. There's a tree in their backyard and they're worried about it going down on the house," she said.
Passengers are working to re-book flights without East Coast connections, but with so many airports affected and so many planes and crews out of place it's proving difficult.
