SFO International Travelers Heed Warning: Be Vigilant
MILLBRAE (KCBS/AP)_ The U.S. government issued a travel alert Sunday, warning Americans of potential terrorist threats in Europe and urging them to be vigilant in public places, including tourist spots and transportation hubs.
KCBS' Anna Duckworth went to San Francisco International Airport to get reaction from travelers at SFO.
One American traveler, Jen Corono, lives abroad in Norway and just vacationed in Hawaii.
She travels to Europe all the time and has been paying close attention to the U.S. State Department travel alert.
Corono said she's now thinking twice and being more alert about places she normally wouldn't have worried about.
"It's places we holiday and have friends that live in. It's a different light in seeing how terrorism is really affecting everywhere," said Corono.
The Associated Press reports the advisory is one step below a formal warning and alerts U.S. citizens living or traveling in Europe to be vigilant in public places.
That same report says dozens of Muslim militants with European citizenship are believed to be hiding out in lawless tribal areas of northwestern Pakistan. Pakistani and Western intelligence officials say they are training for missions that could include terror attacks in Europe's capital cities.
Meanwhile, a French official said Italian police have arrested a Frenchman suspected of having links to a network recruiting fighters for Afghanistan on Sunday. The 28-year-old Algerian man is suspected to be a member of al-Qaida and was the subject of a probe lasting several months-long for his activities.
Corono's husband Dave Schaub was in London when the 2005 tube bombings rocked that city's public transportation system during the morning commute. He says the many warnings issued in recent years haven't affected their travel plans yet.
U.S. and European security experts have recently expressed concern that terrorists may be planning an attack in public places in European cities similar to the deadly shooting spree in Mumbai in 2008.
U.S. Intelligence officials believe Osama Bin Laden is behind the plots.
