200,000 Revelers Ring In New Year Along San Francisco's Waterfront
SAN FRANCISCO (CBS 5) -- An estimated 200,000 revelers descended on San Francisco's waterfront for the annual New Year's fireworks show to ring in the arrival of 2012.
The show, a San Francisco tradition, attracted such a large crowd that some people in areas along the Embarcadero found themselves packed shoulder-to-shoulder.
Though the city's fickle weather and persistent fog can never be counted on to cooperate, the skies above the city were clear for Saturday night's display along with temperatures in the 40s.
The SFPD were out in force throughout the night, and the police recommended that people who had too much to drink use public transit instead of getting behind the wheel of a car.
Bay Area Rapid Transit extended its hours overnight, with the transit agency running trains until 3 a.m. Sunday. San Francisco's Muni buses, trolleys and trains offered free service Saturday night and into the early hours of the New Year.
