SF Wants Fountain, Historic Style Retained At New Apple Store
CUPERTINO (CBS/AP) - San Francisco planners want Apple to keep a beloved city fountain, as it moves forward with plans for a new store in Union Square.
Planners released a review of Apple's design proposal on Thursday. It calls for the Cupertino-based company to keep the fountain at its current spot or find another place for it in the city.
It also wants Apple to work in the architectural style of the square. Apple is currently envisioning one of its classic cube-style stores.
Plans submitted to the city last month showed no space for the 1973 fountain designed by famed local sculptor Ruth Asawa, prompting an outcry from residents.
Apple spokeswoman Michaela Wilkinson said the company intends to find the best place for the fountain when the project is approved.
