SF Transit Officials Ramping Up Taxi Availability For Big Events
SAN FRANCISCO (KCBS) – Efforts are underway to formalize a plan that would allow San Francisco transportation officials to bring in more taxis when there are big weekend events in the city.
With thousands of golf fans in town last weekend for the U.S. Open, for the first time, the San Francisco Municipal Transportation Agency doled out temporary permits, allowing 100 extra cabs to hit the road.
KCBS' Mark Seelig Reports:
The MTA will do the same this weekend when thousands of people are expected for San Francisco Pride.
Charles Rathbone with Luxor Cabs said it's a good move for both sides.
"The MTA is doing a good thing here. They are taking some initiative," said Rathbone. "They're doing something that is not done in other places. That always has some risk involved."
Muni officials said that they have always had the power to upgrade fleet numbers on an emergency basis and are looking at ways to streamline the process now.
Rathbone said that once the kinks are worked out, the move will pay big dividends for cabbies and visitors.
