SF Supervisor Demands NFL Reimburse $5 Million For Super Bowl 50 Expenses
SAN FRANCISCO (CBS SF) -- San Francisco Supervisor Jane Kim is fighting to get the National Football League, not San Francisco taxpayers, to foot the nearly $5 million bill for the costs associated with upcoming Super Bowl 50 events.
Unlike Santa Clara, where Super Bowl 50 takes place Feb. 7 at Levi's Stadium, San Francisco does not have an agreement with the NFL to be reimbursed.
The supervisor took to Twitter Friday, saying "No taxpayer $ for billionaire party."
An analysis of San Francisco's revenues and expenditures associated with hosting public events related to Super Bowl 50 released Friday by the San Francisco Board of Supervisors' Budget and Legislative Analyst found that the city's General Fund expenditures are estimated to cost the city around $4.9 million. Yet only around $500,000 is expected to be reimbursed by the NFL.
"City departments have been requested by the Mayor's Office to identify $4,375,765 of surplus in their General Fund allocations and/or redirect staff time and other resources from planned projects to support this extraordinary special event," the analysis states.
Meanwhile, Santa Clara has an agreement with the Super Bowl 50 Host Committee -- approved by the Santa Clara City Council -- which contains provisions for reimbursement from the Host Committe expected to be over $3.5 million.
Kim says she wants the San Francisco Board of Supervisors to seek reimbursement from the NFL.
