SF Sheriff Mirkarimi, Colleagues Mourn Off-Duty Deputy Found Dead In Vallejo
SAN FRANCISCO (CBS SF) - San Francisco Sheriff Ross Mirkarimi and the local deputy sheriffs' association have expressed their sympathies to those who knew a veteran deputy whose body was found in the water near the Vallejo Municipal Marina on Monday afternoon.
Senior Deputy Don Wilson, president of the 800-member San Francisco Deputy Sheriffs' Association, said in a statement, "Deputy Michael Roberts was a hardworking and well-respected 15-year veteran of the San Francisco's Sheriff's Department. We are deeply saddened by his death and offer our heartfelt sympathies to Mike's wife and children. I speak on behalf of all of our deputies in saying that Mike will be missed."
Mirkarimi offered his "deepest sympathy to the family and friends of Michael Roberts and all those who had the pleasure of knowing and working with him."
Mirkarimi also expressed his appreciation for the efforts of the U.S. Coast Guard, the Solano County Sheriff's Office and the Vallejo Police Department in finding Roberts.
Roberts, 56, was found dead in the water near Dock B at the marina around 3:10 p.m. on Monday, U.S. Coast Guard Petty Officer 3rd Class Loumania Stewart said.
The search for Roberts, which involved boats, a dive team and a helicopter, began after his 26-foot fishing vessel was found unmanned and adrift near the marina at about 6:45 a.m.
The keys were in the boat's ignition and there was a cellphone onboard, Stewart said.
Vallejo police Lt. Kenny Park said the deputy's wallet was also found on the boat. Park said it does not appear Roberts was the victim of a crime.
