SF Recycling Warehouse Fire Controlled Near Bayshore Caltrain Station
SAN FRANCISCO (CBS SF) -- San Francisco firefighters brought a two-alarm fire at a recycling warehouse near the Bayshore Caltrain station under control Tuesday morning, a fire dispatcher said.
The fire was located at a Recology recycling warehouse at 401 Tunnel Ave. The blaze was reported at 8:33 p.m. on Monday and was brought under control at about 6 a.m. this morning, according to a fire dispatcher.
Assistant Fire Chief David Franklin told KCBS that it was a stubborn, smoky fire that burned in an 8-foot tall, 100-yard long pile of old building material including discarded plywood and drywall.
"We had smoke conditions that went from the top of the ceiling down to the floor with zero visibility inside. You could barely just see your hand in front of your face," said Franklin.
"We had smoke coming out all of the entrances at one point in time during this fire," he said.

Because of the conditions, fire crews had to wear a cumbersome breathing apparatus that weighs between 60 to 70 pounds.
Franklin said they managed to get a front loader inside to spread to spread out the pile and give fire crews better access to fight the fire.
