SF Mayor Touts Central Subway Progress From Site Of Future Chinatown Station
SAN FRANCISCO (KCBS) — San Francisco is making good progress on construction of the Central Subway, according to Mayor Ed Lee.
Lee and city transportation officials gave an update on the project at the site of the future Chinatown subway station on Friday, located at Stockton and Washington.
San Francisco Municipal Transportation Agency Director Ed Reiskin said the cross-town subway is the second phase of the T-Third rail line.
"There's going to be some noise at this event because this is a very busy street and that's one of the reasons why we're doing this project," Reiskin explained.
"We're forging ahead with a $235 million new subway station in Chinatown," said Mayor Ed Lee.
According to the mayor, the Chinatown station will be matched by others in Union Square, Moscone Center and at 4th and Brannan.
Reiskin said the planning began 20 years ago and last year utilities were relocated at the Moscone Center.
"We're now finishing up the same process at Union Square," he said explaining all the commotion that's been in that area.
The subway will carry passengers from 3rd Street to Chinatown when it opens in 2019.
