SF Mayor Lee Orders Roll-Out Of Free Car Charging Stations
SAN FRANCISCO (CBS/AP) -- Mayor Ed Lee has directed the city of San Francisco to provide free charges for electric vehicles at 19 city-owned garages and the San Francisco International Airport.
Lee said the new infrastructure will make it easier for people to charge their electric cars when they are away from in-home charging stations.
KCBS' Melissa Culross Reports:
The first charging station will be installed in June, and more than 80 stations should be in place by year's end. Many of the stations will offer both 120-volt and 240-volt charging.
Several other locations will house the stations, possibly including some neighborhood libraries.
Lee said the network will build the local market for electric vehicles and will help San Francisco meet its goal to reduce greenhouse gases 20 percent below 1990 levels by 2012.
