Sewage Spilled In Marin County
SAN RAFAEL (CBS/AP) -- Ross Valley Sanitary District officials say 1,000 gallons of sewage spilled into a Greenbrae creek due to an equipment failure at a pump station.
The Marin Independent Journal reports that the spill occurred Tuesday afternoon at Bon Air Shopping Center station.
District officials said a pipe leading to an air-release valve failed, which caused a backup and the spill.
The sewage went into a storm drain that the district said drains into a nearby creek.
Local and state authorities were notified and the water is being tested.
The Ross Valley district agreed previously to pay $1.5 million to settle a Regional Water Quality Control Board complaint concerning 36 sewage overflows from 2008-2011.
Those overflows spilled 3.1 million gallons of untreated wastewater.
