Several Changes Planned As GG Bridge Switches To All Electric Tolls
SAN FRANCISCO (KCBS)—Road Crews will prepare the Golden Gate Bridge this weekend for the switch to the all-electronic tolls going into effect on Wednesday. There will be many changes that commuters will have to adjust to.
Come Wednesday morning, there will be no stopping at the toll plaza. Motorists will be able to move though at 25 mph rather than the previous five mph. All lanes will be FasTrak and when exiting there will be lane directions marking on the pavement.
KCBS' Holly Quan Reports:
"Right now, there's no striping to indicate how to merge once you come out of the toll plaza," bridge spokeswoman Mary Currie said. "It's just whoever gets ahead of the other car, so we're going to merge the toll lanes two at time and formalize that merge pattern."
A 27-foot LED sign will be put up over the plaza that will warn drivers "do not stop, automatic tolling." There will also be a dedicated carpool lane.
"For the first time ever, we are adding a dedicated carpool toll lane." Currie said. "It's the second lane in from right-hand side as you are going south."
Windows on the tool booths will be screened out so that drivers who aren't aware of the switch won't stop to look for someone taking the toll.
