Senators Call For Commission To Investigate Alleged Russian Interference In Election
SAN FRANCISCO (AP) -- Democratic Senators Dianne Feinstein of California, Ben Cardin of Maryland and Patrick Leahy of Vermont are calling for an independent, nonpartisan commission to comprehensively investigate alleged Russian interference in the 2016 election.
The commission would investigate alleged Russian hacking of U.S. political entities and election infrastructure, seek to identify those responsible, and recommend a response as well as actions the U.S. can take to defend itself in the future.
They want the commission to have access to classified and open-source information as well as having subpoena power.
Leahy says the right to vote -- the foundation of American democracy -- is undermined if a foreign country can interfere with democratic processes.
