Security Tightening Around California As 9/11 Anniversary Nears
SAN FRANCISCO (KCBS) – The upcoming tenth anniversary of the September 11 attacks has airports, bridges and sporting events around the Bay Area tightening up security.
A lot of the strategies are confidential but the Federal Bureau of Investigation and Department of Homeland Security have been briefing state and local law enforcement prior to the anniversary.

At San Francisco International Airport, spokesman Mike McCarron said only frequent travelers might notice a stepped up police presence in the windows surrounding 9/11, as most of the extra security will be behind the scenes.
"We were able to take a lot of things we learned over the past ten years and incorporate it in our design when we refurbished Terminal 2," McCarron said. "A lot of these security requirements had to be shoehorned into old buildings that didn't really fit. As airports are starting to remodel and redesign, they can take some new security requirements and put them in properly so they don't feel cramped or rushed."
The California Highway Patrol said that staffing will already be at 80 percent for the Labor Day holiday, with September 11 just a week later.
"The Golden Gate Bridge and all the other bridges in the Bay Area, we have jurisdiction and responsibility to keep those areas safe," said CHP Sergeant Trent Cross.
As far as sporting events, the San Francisco Giants play the Los Angeles Dodgers at AT&T Park on September 11 while the 49ers host Seattle for the beginning of the NFL regular season at Candlestick Park.
