Secretary Of Homeland Security Speaks At SJSU
SAN JOSE (CBS SF) - Secretary of Homeland Security Janet Napolitano spoke at San Jose State Monday morning. Specifically, she was expected to call on high tech companies to join the federal government in its fight against international hackers.
Congress is presently considering several bills to encourage government and businesses to share information about computer hackers. Some experts say such sharing is a good thing, for the most part.
"But on the other hand there are concerns that, if the government and industry get too cozy in sharing information, it could raise some civil liberties issues," reasoned KCBS Technology Analyst Larry Magid.
Several well-known companies, including Adobe, eBay, Intel and Cisco have already agreed to share information about hackers through Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory, proving that sharing information could trigger a bit of a gold rush for Silicon Valley companies.
"Just as we have companies and the government working on military and industrial issues, we're also going to have companies and the government working on cyber-security," Magid said.
