Search For Driver Who Struck And Killed Elderly Man In Oakland

OAKLAND (CBS/AP/BCN) -- Oakland police are looking for a hit-and-run driver who killed an elderly man crossing the street in a crosswalk.

Trieu Thai was struck and killed at 14th and Market streets at 6:05 a.m. Friday, Oakland police Officer Jeff Thomason said.

When officers arrived, they found Thai, 91, of Oakland, lying in the roadway and unresponsive, Thomason said.

Despite the efforts of the Oakland Fire Department along with paramedics, Thai succumbed to his injuries at the scene.

A preliminary investigation indicates that a four-door sedan struck Thai while making a left turn onto 14th Street from northbound Market Street.

Thomason said the victim was walking "somewhere in the area of the marked crosswalk."

The sedan fled the scene of the crash before police arrived.
