SCUD Missile Launchers, Tanks, Howitzers, In Bay Area Auction
PORTOLA VALLEY (KPIX) -- In the market for a tank, armored bridge carrier, amphibious jeep, or maybe a SCUD missile launcher, complete with attached missile? They can be yours, for a few thousand dollars or up to a few million dollars as the Military Vehicle Technology Foundation auctions off 200 military vehicles from the Littlefield collection, including historic vehicles and armaments from both sides of nearly every armed conflict in the last century.
Spread across 460 acres in San Mateo County is late tank collector Jacques Littlefield's estate, and half of these vintage war machines are heading to a museum. To pay for that museum, the other half are available to the public.
All are used, some complete with armor-piercing artillery round damage, but an army of volunteers has been working to bring them up to pristine condition. The guns, however, are all inoperable.
They include Soviet personnel carriers, some offered without reserve, estimated to go for up to $25,000 (unrestored).
The Select Auction includes a Sherman tank expected to fetch up to $450,000,
The most expensive? A Panzerkampfwagen IV Ausf. H tank captured by Israel in the 1967 Six Day War that could fetch $2.6 million.
The auction is July 11th and 12th, with a preview this week.
